Monastery GRACANICA Srpski
Builder: King Milutin
Built: XIV century

The last church founded by king Milutin, , the greatest serbian church founder, in 1321, close to Priština. Gračanica is the highest achievement of late-byzantine architecture and it has international value, which is far from the usual belief that is has only local significance. The beauty of her architectural, slulptural and painted forms give her uniqueness.

Gračanica is the last church founded by king Milutin, greatest serbian church founder, and it was built in 1321. not far from Priština. Church of the Dormition of the Virgin saved the original inscription with the year of its foundation, in the southern chapel. The model of the church from the patrons portrait of king Milutin shows the original visual aspect. Gračanica is five-domed cross-shaped church but it is different from contemporary churches by its ingenious facade design with rhytmical disposition of windows, arches and smaler domes and the largest dome abive all this, emphasizes vertical aspect of the building. The facades are polychromes because of the usage of different materials and the dynamic of the forms is achieved with alteration of shadows and light. Outer nartex was built later, because it was not painted on patrons portrait, probablz in mid XIV century. Its considered the most beautifull medieval outer nartex in Serbia, stylisticly coherent to the church.

Gračanica is one of very few serbian temples which has preserved almost entire fresco-decoration. Monastery was bishopry center so the painted decoration reflects advanced theological thoughts. The focus of decoration is on the origin of the royal dominion because Milutin was one of the most powerfull rulers of his time, married to byzantine princess Simonida, daughter of emperor Andronik II Comnenius. In Gračanica is for the first time painted representation of Nemanjićs genealogy. Stylisticaly frescoes belong to renaissance of Paleologian, and the artists were probably famous Thesalinoc artists Michael Astrapa and Eutichius which also painted Virgin Perivlepta in Ohrid, Staro Nagoričino and Virgin Ljeviška.
